How to detect tap on back cover of device

Hi I am working on an application in which I have to recognize the tap on back cover or side of the device and perform an action. I have tried the sensors but values are so dynamics that a small tap can not be recognized. Is there any way to recognize the tap. This tap can also be recorded on camera also. Please help. Thanks in advance.
