Access file in WPD device such as iPhone directly without downloading it first

I am working on a software which downloads files from WPD devices such as Apple iPhone, I am wondering if it is possible to access a file directly without having to download it first?

If yes, how is this done?

Goal

Access file directly so that EXIF data can be read which lets the software determine if the file is fit for download or not.

Why the download-first-analyze-second is not suitable

Since a device such as iPhone can have up to 64 or more gigabytes of storage, downloading large files will take a lot of time and is practically unneccessary if only a small part of the file is going to be analyzed.
